Online Dating Scam Case: News of online dating and affairs have now become common. Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, a 67 year old woman got badly trapped in the web of love. Actually, the woman had fallen in love with Facebook and was in constant touch with it for seven years. But the woman had never met that person. Even after not meeting the woman, she loved the man so much that she gave him 2.2 million MYR i.e. approximately Rs 4.4 crore in 7 years. CCI (Commercial Crime Investigation Department) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohd Yusof gave detailed information about this in a press conference.
According to the Star report, in October 2017, the victim woman had connected with the scammer on Facebook. At that time, the scammer introduced himself as an American businessman who was involved in the purchase of medical equipment in Singapore. He won the trust of the woman within a month. He claimed that he was going through financial crisis. On this basis, he had asked for RM 5000 from the woman in the name of transportation.
Borrow from family and friends
As time passed, the scammer told the woman about financial problems and crisis related to various businesses. To help him, the victim made 306 bank transactions in 50 different accounts over the years, resulting in a loss of RM2,210,692.60. The surprising thing is that he borrowed all the money from his friends and family. Whereas the victim had never met on video call or face to face.
Friend made me realize it was a scam
The victim and the scammer used to talk to each other only on voice calls. In the month of November, the woman told the whole story to a friend who made her realize that she was being scammed. Giving information about this entire incident, the Director of CCID appealed to the people to be cautious in such online relationships and not get caught in such scams.
